Injections of Platelet Rich Plasma are becoming more popular for treating a wide range of conditions, ranging from hair loss to sports injuries. This treatment uses the patient’s blood cells to speed up healing.

What Is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
The Platelet Rich Plasma is composed of two components: the plasma or liquid blood portion, and the platelets. These blood cells play an important part in healing the entire body. The clotting ability of platelets is well known, but growth factors can also trigger cell reproduction or stimulate tissue regeneration in the treated area. Platelet-rich blood is simply blood with more platelets.
For the creation of platelet-rich blood, the clinicians will take a sample of blood from the patient and spin it rapidly in a device known as a centrifuge. This separates out the other components from the platelets and concentrates them within the plasma.
Why PRP?
The solution, which is made from platelet-rich blood plasma, is then injected into the area of injury, such as a damaged tendon or knee pain. The specialist may guide the injection using ultrasound in some cases. In order to speed up the healing process, the idea is to increase concentrations of bioproteins and hormones called growth factors in a particular area.
PRP injections are not fully understood. The increased concentration of growth factors in platelet-rich blood may speed or stimulate the healing process. This could reduce pain, encourage hair growth, and shorten the time it takes to heal an injury.
What Are the Uses of PRP?
The PRP injections can be used to treat a wide range of conditions*, from pain and injury in the musculoskeletal system through to cosmetic procedures.
Tendon, Ligament, and Muscle Injuries
PRP injections can be used to treat many musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. In chronic tendon conditions such as Tennis elbow and Jumper’s Knee, it can take a very long time for the injury to heal. PRP injections can be added to a treatment plan to help speed up healing, reduce pain, and allow a quicker return to activity.
Post-surgical Healing
The first time PRP was used by doctors, it was to speed up healing following jaw or cosmetic surgery. Post-surgical PRP has been expanded to include healing muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These tissues are notoriously difficult to heal.
Osteoarthritis
Early studies suggest that PRP injections can help reduce osteoarthritis stiffness and pain by modulating the joint environment and decreasing inflammation. However, research is still growing.
Hair Loss
Injections of PRP can be used to treat male pattern hair loss, both by preventing hair fall and encouraging new hair growth. PRP injections can be used to stimulate hair growth following hair transplants.
Skin Rejuvenation
There is limited evidence that PRP can reduce wrinkles or other signs of ageing.

PRP Therapy Side Effects and Risks
The PRP procedure is low-risk and usually does not cause any major side effects. You should be hydrated and eat before the procedure to avoid feeling lightheaded. You may feel some bruising and soreness at the injection site after the procedure.
The risk of allergic reactions is lower with PRP injections than with other injectable medications such as corticosteroids. Other less common risks associated with PRP injections are:
- Bleeding
- Tissue damage
- Infection
- Nerve injuries
Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of PRP injections.
How Much Does PRP Cost? Does Insurance Cover It?
Depending on where the injection is administered, the cost of an injection can range from $750 to $850. Some patients only need one injection, while others may require two or more. Some insurance companies cover the full or partial cost of this procedure. Contact your insurance provider directly to find out if this procedure is covered.
